I have two mountain bikes with scandium frames and they are substantially lighter and more expensive than my aluminum framed bikes. There are some more exotic alloys including scandium and lithium in limited use which aim to reduce frame weight even further. In practical use the different alloys will be indistinguishable though 7005 is slightly cheaper to work with as it requires less overall processing. Scandium is essentially a lighter variation of aluminum alloy more expensive material to produce and work with.

Back in the early 2000s there was quite a choice of materials for frames on the market. Most likely just a cost issue. Carbon was just entering the fray but you could certainly still find nice modern steel bikes titanium magnesium aluminum and something called scandium which is an alloy using both aluminum and scandium. Scandium improves the welding characteristics of some aluminum alloys with superior fatigue resistance permitting the use of smaller diameter.
