You and your sonorous voice are needed to read to the blind in your community. Many network libraries use volunteer readers to record materials for local use some of which is circulated to the larger nls network. If you are available during the earlier part of the day you could read the daily paper if not perhaps you can be a friendly visitor after work hours or on the weekend. You may contact a network library to see if they have current openings for volunteer narrators.

The talking books are circulated by the ohio library for the blind and physically disabled in cleveland. To maintain service and to keep these dedicated men and women safe we re transitioning from in studio readings by volunteers to at home recordings and live readings via telephone. Until the early 1970 s there was no good way for people who were blind to access the contents of the daily newspaper. Voicecorps was founded as corrs the central ohio radio reading service by irwin hott fred allemeier and stanley doran each of whom were blind. Six opportunities exist for readers friendly visitors or mail assistants to help their neighbors. Volunteers are the core of our ability to deliver service. Access news is a reading service that allows volunteers to record current news magazines circulars and other items of interest so that people who are blind low vision or cannot read conventional print can listen to these publications through the telephone.
